An inventory should help you find a card and avoid buying duplicates. It does not need dozens of columns to be useful.
Record the essentials
List game, set, number, language, finish, quantity and storage location. For important cards, add a photograph and acquisition date. Use consistent terms so the list remains easy to filter.
Work in small batches
Begin with one binder or box and finish it before moving on. Mixing several partly recorded piles quickly creates errors. Put completed cards in a separate area.
Maintain the system
Update the inventory after purchases and trades rather than waiting for a large backlog. Regular backups protect the time you have invested. Official databases help check references but do not replace inspecting your own copy for language, finish and condition. A reliable storage location is often more useful than a constantly changing price estimate. Keep the process simple enough that you will still use it after the initial sorting session.
