Identify a Magic card by set and collector number

Two cards with the same name can differ in artwork, language, frame or finish. To find an exact copy, the collector number and set code are more reliable than an approximate visual description.

Record three identifiers

Note the name, set code and printed collector number. Add the language and whether the card is foil. Photograph the whole front without cropping the bottom, where useful identification details often appear.

Compare the correct printing

A borderless variant may have a different number from the regular version. Compare a singles listing with your copy point by point. A price difference becomes meaningful only after confirming the same treatment and a comparable condition.

Search by card name, then check the set reference in the title and the offered variants. The official Gatherer database helps verify gameplay characteristics. For a themed collection, this process prevents a missing card from being confused with another printing you already own. Keep these identifiers in your checklist so future purchases remain easy to check.
