A mana curve shows how your spells are distributed by cost. It does not measure a deck’s entire quality, but it helps explain why some hands offer nothing useful for several turns.
Make the problem visible
Lay nonland cards out by cost and see where the piles grow. If many spells are expensive, ask how you survive until you can cast them. Conversely, a deck full of cheap cards may run out of resources in a longer game.
Count real requirements
Printed cost does not always describe how a card is used. Some abilities require extra mana and some cards offer different casting options. Check coloured symbols too: a cheap spell can still be hard to cast with an unsuitable mana base.
Change things methodically
After several games, replace a small number of cards and compare opening hands. Aim to improve how your games unfold rather than achieve a supposedly universal curve. Your format, strategy and possible commander all affect what the deck needs.
