Before choosing a long card list, describe what your deck wants to accomplish in one sentence. Making creatures, reusing the graveyard and benefiting from lands lead to different construction choices.
Choose your commander
Your commander should support a style you enjoy. Check current format rules, colour identity and restrictions affecting the cards you want. Ask your playgroup what power level and game length it prefers.
Divide cards by role
Sort cards into mana, draw, answers and ways to finish a game. One card can fill several roles, but do not rely on a fragile combination to cover every need. Test games reveal which functions are actually missing.
Buy after initial testing
Record cards that repeatedly do little and problems that keep appearing before replacing dozens of cards. A pack of one hundred matching sleeves helps prepare a complete deck, but check your deck box capacity if you also want to include tokens and double-sleeved cards.
