Protection depends on use. A card handled during games, kept in a binder or transported individually faces different conditions.
Sleeves as the first layer
A correctly sized sleeve limits direct contact and rubbing. Work on a clean surface and never force a card into an overly tight protector. Check dimensions: trading cards do not all use the same size.
Rigid protection
A toploader adds a rigid enclosure for transporting or storing an individual card. Put the card in a compatible sleeve first. A toploader is not a complete solution by itself: prevent movement inside the parcel and choose appropriate storage.
A useful routine
After opening packs, protect the cards you want to keep before sorting them. Inspect playing sleeves regularly and replace damaged ones.
