You do not need to own everything to enjoy collecting Pokémon. A favourite Pokémon, a generation or an illustration style can give your first purchases a clear direction.
Set a simple rule
Decide whether you want French, Japanese or multiple languages. Also choose between collecting one character and completing a set. Both goals can coexist, but starting with one makes budgeting easier.
Build a short want list
Record ten priority cards with their collector numbers and versions. Confirm identities in a reliable database. A precise list prevents an alternative illustration from being confused with the regular card of the same Pokémon.
Keep discovery enjoyable
You can reserve a small part of the budget for boosters and the rest for selected cards. Do not turn a disappointing opening into an obligation to buy another pack. Store new cards promptly, update your list and notice which parts of the collection you most enjoy looking at.
