A successful draft starts before the packs are opened. Gather a group, announce the format and provide enough table space for everyone to keep their picks and deck separate.
Useful supplies
For a traditional draft, check the official rules and allow three suitable boosters per player, plus basic lands. A 30-pack box covers the 24 boosters needed by eight players, leaving six. Agree what happens to those extras: another evening, prizes or a distribution decided together.
Avoid disagreements
Explain who keeps the cards at the end. For a first event, letting everyone keep their drafted cards is easy to understand. Do not introduce rare redrafting after the packs have been opened if it was not agreed beforehand.
Help new players
Allow time to explain passing packs and building decks. Keep a shared basic-land supply and spare sleeves nearby. Agree a number of rounds before starting so the evening finishes at a reasonable time. The point is to enjoy playing with the cards you selected, rather than turn a friendly gathering into an unexpectedly endless event.
